Granny Square Patterns: 4 Free Designs

Granny squares can be traditional and open, solid, sunburst-shaped, or turned after each round for a reversible result. These four original tutorials explain the different stitch placement and construction choices.

Granny square patterns to explore

1. Traditional Granny Square

Tamara Kelly at Moogly starts with a chain ring and builds groups of double crochet in chain spaces. The sample uses worsted-weight yarn with an H hook.

2. Solid Granny Square

Tamara Kelly at Moogly is worked from the center outward. Its solid fabric comes from double crochet in each prior-round stitch with double-crochet, chain-2 corners.

3. Sunburst Granny Square

Cheryl Bennett at Crochet 365 Knit Too uses a 4 mm hook and four colors of worsted-weight scrap yarn. Each square is approximately 4 by 4 inches.

4. Easy Crochet Granny Square

Sarah Stearns at Sarah Maker uses worsted-weight yarn and a 5 mm/H hook in the example. It turns after each round to make the square reversible and reduce skewing.
