Crochet Snowflake Patterns: 10 Free Designs

A crochet snowflake is a small project you can make an evening, and the same motif turns into a lot of things: an ornament, earrings, a bookmark, a coaster, even a throw. These ten show how far one idea can stretch, from a 1.5 inch pair of earrings to a 50 inch throw.

All ten are free, and each one links straight to the designer’s own page. I ordered them from smallest to biggest, so the quick wins come first. If you want more holiday makes, see our crochet Christmas decor patterns, and for matching small projects try our crochet earring patterns and coaster patterns.

Crochet snowflakes to explore

1. Crochet Snowflake Christmas Ornament

Designer Breann at Hooked on Homemade Happiness. A snowflake worked in the round from a magic ring in worsted weight yarn with an H/5.0 mm hook. The FAQ says cotton gives crisper stitches, though acrylic also works, and a stiffener or light blocking helps it keep its shape. A tassel tutorial is linked on the page. The written rounds are free.

2. Starflower Snowflake

Designer Aki M at knitpurlhook. A snowflake in just three rounds, written in US terms with step photos. The tutorial sample uses 10 ply cotton (Paris by DROPS Design) with a 6.5 mm hook, and the blog’s other snowflakes use a 4 mm hook, with the advice to go up two or three hook sizes from what the yarn suggests. Free on the page.

3. Crochet Snowflake Earrings

Designer Erangi Udeshika at Crochet For You. Tiny snowflakes about 1.5 inches wide, worked from a magic ring in 6 strand embroidery floss with a 3 mm hook, using half double crochet, single crochet, slip stitches and chain loops. The full pattern and assembly steps are free.

4. Crochet Snowflake Bookmark

Designer Olena at GoldenLucyCrafts. A snowflake with a tassel, about 11 inches long in all, worked in the round in #3 cotton (Patons Grace in the sample) with a 2.75 mm hook and a 3.75 mm hook for the tassel. A button is glued on. Rated easy, with the free pattern on the page and a printable PDF sold separately.

5. Crochet Snowflake Square

Designer Ariana Wimsett at Crafting Happiness. A textured 25 cm (10 inch) square with a snowflake worked into a one row repeat, in Marriner Aran in gray and white with a 5 mm hook. There are two YouTube tutorials, one standard and one left handed. Free, and good for joining into a blanket.

6. Snowflake Coasters and Holder

Designer Jo at Jo to the World Creations. A 5.5 inch coaster with a snowflake in one color on a contrasting background, plus a matching 6.5 inch holder. It uses any size 4 yarn in two colors and a 4.5 mm hook, worked from a magic circle, and is rated easy. A step by step video covers both. The free pattern is on the page, and a paid PDF is sold.

Designer Darleen Hopkins at Crochet by Darleen Hopkins. A mitt for the car, about 11 by 9 inches, in feltable worsted wool with a 3.75 mm hook, decorated with a 6 inch crocheted snowflake and felted, with an opening for the ice scraper.
