This is KnotToYarn’s own original pattern, free to use, and you’re welcome to sell what you make from it.

Materials

  • Size 10 crochet thread or fingering weight cotton, about 5 g
  • 1.75 mm steel hook (for thread) or 2.5 mm hook (for fingering yarn)
  • 2 earring fish hooks and 2 small jump rings
  • Yarn needle, scissors; optional fabric stiffener or sugar-water solution

Finished size: About 3.5 cm (1.4 in) diameter with thread; 4.5 cm (1.75 in) with fingering yarn
Skill level: Beginner
Abbreviations (US terms): ch (chain), sc (single crochet), dc (double crochet), sl st (slip stitch), sp (space)

Instructions

Round 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 11 dc into the ring, sl st to the top of the ch-3 to join: 12 dc. Pull the ring closed tightly.

Round 2: Ch 1, *sc in the next st, ch 3; repeat from * around, ending sl st in the first sc: 12 sc and 12 ch-3 loops.

Round 3: Sl st into the first ch-3 loop, ch 1, *(sc, ch 3, sc) all in the next ch-3 loop; repeat from * around, sl st to the first sc to join, a lacy picot edge with 12 points.

Fasten off and weave in both ends carefully, on jewelry, loose ends show.

Make a second motif exactly the same.

Finishing

Open a jump ring with pliers, catch any ch-3 picot point of the motif plus the loop of the fish hook, and close the ring. Repeat for the second earring. For a crisper shape, dab the motifs with fabric stiffener and let them dry flat under a book before attaching the hardware.

Tip: Crochet thread gives delicate, professional results, but if you have never worked with a steel hook before, make your first pair in fingering yarn, same pattern, larger and more forgiving.

Why Crochet Earrings Are the Perfect Quick Project?

They need barely any materials, work up in under an hour, and let you play with bold colors and shapes without committing to anything big. Handmade gift, craft-fair item, or just a way to use up scrap yarn, earrings check every box.

Plus, they are lightweight and comfortable to wear all day long, making them a practical accessory that actually gets used.

If you’re fairly new, earrings are a great next step once you’ve got the single crochet and double crochet down. Many of the designs below use just those two plus a slip stitch for seams. For more on the fundamentals, see our beginner patterns guide.

What Materials Do You Need for Crochet Earrings?

Before you start, gather your supplies, having everything ready makes the whole session go more smoothly.

Crochet Thread or Lightweight Yarn: Size 10 crochet cotton thread is the gold standard for earrings. It creates a fine, delicate fabric that holds its shape well. You can also use fingering-weight yarn for a slightly chunkier look. Cotton is preferred over acrylic because it is stiffer and more durable for jewelry that needs to hold its shape over time.

Hooks: A 2.0mm to 3.5mm hook works best for most earring patterns. Steel hooks give you the most control with fine thread. If you are new to working with thin materials, start with a slightly larger hook and fingering yarn before graduating to size 10 thread.

Earring Findings: You will need jump rings (small metal rings), fishhook ear wires, and possibly post backs depending on the style. Hypoallergenic options like surgical steel or titanium are best for sensitive ears. You can find these at any craft store or online.

Optional: Fabric stiffener (like Mod Podge Stiffy), craft glue, and a blocking mat. Stiffener is especially useful for hoop earrings and any design that needs to hold a specific shape. According to the Craft Yarn Council, properly finishing your work is just as important as the stitching itself.

What Are the 15 Stunning Free Crochet Earring Patterns?

1. Simple Crochet Stud Earrings

These minimalist studs are the easiest pattern on the list. Using single crochet in the round with a 2.5mm hook and size 10 thread, you create a tiny circle that sits flat against the ear. Work 6 single crochets into a magic ring (learn the magic ring technique), then slip stitch to close. Attach to a flat pad post with craft glue and you are done in 20 minutes. Make them in solid colors or use two strands of different colored thread for a marled effect.

2. Granny Square Earrings

Miniature granny squares make absolutely adorable earrings. Follow the first two rounds of a standard granny square pattern using our granny square tutorial, but stop at round two for a tiny 1.5-inch square. Use bright contrasting colors for the center and borders. Attach a jump ring to one corner and connect to a fishhook wire. These work well for casual wear and pair beautifully with boho outfits.

3. Crochet Hoop Earrings

For this pattern, you will wrap crochet stitches around a metal hoop base (available at craft stores). Using slip stitches and single crochets, cover the hoop completely in a spiral pattern. You can use a solid color or alternate colors every few stitches for a striped effect. For extra flair, add tiny crochet flowers or beads along the hoop. The Moogly Blog has excellent tutorials on wrapping hoops with crochet.

4. Bohemian Fringe Earrings

These statement earrings feature a triangular base with long crochet chains hanging as fringe. Start with a chain of 8, then work single crochet decreases to form a triangle. Cut 20-30 chains of 4-6 inches and attach them to the bottom edge using slip stitches or lark’s head knots. The longer the fringe, the more dramatic the look. Use earthy tones like terracotta, sage green, and mustard for a true boho vibe.

5. Crochet Flower Earrings

Tiny crochet flowers are classic earring designs. Create a 5-petal flower by chaining 3, working 2 double crochets in each of 5 chain spaces, then joining with a slip stitch. Add a tiny French knot or bead in the center. These work up in about 25 minutes per pair and suit spring and summer. Pair them with a simple outfit to let the earrings be the star.

6. Diamond Shaped Drop Earrings

Elegant diamond shapes are created by increasing on the way up and decreasing on the way down. Chain 4, work 2 double crochets in the fourth chain from hook, chain 2, work 2 double crochets in the same stitch. Repeat this pattern for 3-4 rows, then mirror the decreases. The result is a delicate diamond that catches light beautifully. Attach to a long fishhook wire for extra dangling movement.

7. Crochet Star Earrings

Great for patriotic holidays or everyday sparkle, these tiny stars use the bobble stitch or popcorn stitch to create dimensional points. A 5-point star takes about 30 minutes and looks stunning in metallic gold or silver thread. Make a set for the Fourth of July or use pastel colors for a whimsical everyday look. These also make fantastic gifts when attached to a pretty card.

8. Crochet Triangle Earrings

Simple geometric triangles are endlessly versatile. Work a chain of 6, then single crochet in each chain across. On the return row, decrease at both ends. Continue until you have 1 stitch left. The result is a clean, modern triangle. Make a graduated set of 3 triangles on a single ear wire for a cascading waterfall effect. These look especially chic in monochromatic neutral tones.

9. Shell Stitch Earrings

The shell stitch creates a beautiful scalloped edge that works well for circular earrings. Work a foundation ring of 12 double crochets, then work shell stitches (3 double crochets in one stitch) around the ring. The natural scalloping creates a flower-like shape without any shaping required. These elegant earrings work up in about 35 minutes and look store-bought.

10. Crochet Circle Dangle Earrings

These feature 2-3 concentric circles connected vertically for a cascading effect. Make the largest circle with a foundation of 8 single crochets, then make progressively smaller circles with 6 and 4 stitches respectively. Connect them with a short chain and attach to ear wires. Use ombre or gradient yarn for a stunning color transition from top to bottom.

11. Granny Stripe Mini Earrings

Using the concept from granny stripe patterns, create tiny rectangular stripes for a retro look. Work 3 rows of alternating colors in single crochet (about 10 stitches wide), then add a fringe edge. These rectangular earrings have a fun, casual vibe that works well with denim and casual outfits. Kids and teens love these too.

12. Crochet Snowflake Earrings

Holiday-themed snowflakes are always popular. Using crochet thread and a 1.5mm steel hook, create a 6-point snowflake using chain spaces and double crochets. Stiffen with fabric stiffener and attach to sterling silver ear wires for an elegant winter accessory. These sell incredibly well at holiday craft fairs and make wonderful stocking stuffers.

13. Tassel Drop Crochet Earrings

Combine a small crochet medallion (single crochet circle) with a bundle of yarn tassels. Wrap yarn around a cardboard template 20 times, tie at the top, cut the bottom loops, and attach to the medallion. The key is keeping the tassels neat and even. These trendy earrings are everywhere right now and are surprisingly simple to make. Use bold colors like coral, turquoise, or emerald green.

14. Crochet Heart Earrings

Tiny crochet hearts are romantic and sweet. Follow the first round of a heart pattern to create a 1-inch heart shape. Use fine thread and a small hook for a delicate look. Red and pink are classic choices, but consider making them in black for an edgy Valentine’s alternative. Add a coat of clear nail polish to stiffen and protect.

15. Multi-Color Mandala Earrings

Small mandala patterns create showstopping earrings. Work 3-4 rounds of a mandala using different colors for each round. Round one might be single crochet in a ring, round two uses double crochet shells, round three adds picot stitches for texture. The layered color effect is eye-catching and unique. These are intermediate level but worth the effort for the wow factor.

What Are the Best Tips for Professional-Looking Crochet Earrings?

Whichever design you pick, make both earrings from the same starting point so they come out identical. Count your stitches carefully and use a stitch marker.

Second, invest in a fabric stiffener for any earrings that need to hold a shape. Simply dip the finished piece, shape it on a blocking mat, and let it dry overnight.

Third, use quality earring findings, as cheap metals can irritate sensitive ears and tarnish quickly. Surgical steel, titanium, and gold-filled findings are the best choices for long-lasting comfort.

Fourth, consider adding a tiny dab of clear nail polish or jewelry glue on knots where you attach jump rings to prevent them from slipping loose over time. For more finishing tips on your free crochet earring patterns, see our guide on weaving in crochet ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best yarn for crochet earrings?

For most designs, size 10 crochet cotton thread is the best choice. It makes a fine, sturdy fabric that holds its shape and looks professional. Cotton beats acrylic here because it’s naturally stiffer and more durable. For a chunkier look, fingering-weight cotton or a cotton blend works too.

How long do crochet earrings take to make?

Most pairs take 20 to 60 minutes. Simple studs and circles are quickest at around 20; designs with multiple elements, shaping, or embellishments can run up to an hour. That makes them great for batch-making gifts or building up craft-show stock.

How do I stiffen crochet earrings?

Use a commercial fabric stiffener like Mod Podge Stiffy or Aleene’s Stiffen-Quick. Dip the finished earring in the stiffener, squeeze out excess, shape it on a blocking mat or towel, and let it dry completely (usually 12-24 hours). For a lighter approach, you can spray with starch and steam iron on a low setting. Always test on a swatch first.

Are crochet earrings durable enough for daily wear?

Yes, made with quality cotton thread and properly stiffened, crochet earrings are quite durable. The keys are the right materials (cotton thread, not acrylic yarn), stiffening the finished piece, and using secure jump rings and good ear wires. Avoid pulling or snagging them, and store them in a jewelry box or on an earring tree to keep their shape.
