Crochet hearts can be flat appliques, stuffed amigurumi pieces, or worked in several sizes. These eight original patterns make it easier to choose the shape and scale you want before beginning.
Stuffed versions need fiberfill on hand; flat appliques just need a hook you’re comfortable with.
Heart patterns to explore
1. Crochet Heart Pattern
Cheryl Bennett calls this the easiest crochet heart pattern on the planet, and it comes as three heart patterns, starting with a medium size heart. You can make it in red for a traditional heart, pink and white, or your own colors, and she suggests them for Valentine’s Day gifts and decorations, applique motifs and garlands. It is a flat heart, so it is good for adding to other projects.
2. Amigurumi Heart
This is Cheryl’s amigurumi heart, made in Premier Parfait Chunky, a #6 super bulky chenille yarn, so it is a very fast project, about 5 inches tall and 5 inches wide, like a little heart pillow. She says you can make smaller hearts with worsted yarn, but the size will turn out different, and she is very enthusiastic about chenille after avoiding it for years.
3. Crochet Heart Pattern – 3 Sizes
Sarah Stearns’ heart comes in three sizes from one pattern, and the largest is 3.25 by 3 inches in worsted weight yarn on an H/5 mm hook. You can stop after round one for a mini heart, round two for a medium and round three for a large. The hearts have a soft, squishy texture, and she suggests stringing them into a garland.
4. Easy Amigurumi Stuffed Heart
Kylee’s heart is worked from the top down from two joined circles with a 4.5 mm hook and worsted yarn, about 3.5 inches across and tall, and it can be made in a heartbeat. She says both worsted and bulky yarn work, but you will need to adjust the hook size, and she suggests turning them into keychains or a garland. It is a good first amigurumi if you have never made one.
6. Heart Amigurumi
StringyDingDing rates this Easy, in medium weight red yarn on a 4 mm hook with 8 mm safety eyes and black embroidery thread, so it is a heart with a face. You make the left side, then the right side, crochet them together, then decrease, add the eyes, and finish. It is a free pattern, and a PDF and a Valentine’s Day PDF bundle are sold.
7. Two-Bump Amigurumi Heart
Lindsay at Making Stitches designed this two-bump heart, worked from two rounded bumps that join at round seven, in DK yarn (Scheepjes Catona) on a 2.5 mm hook. She recommends using a hook one size smaller than the ball band says for a tight fabric, for example 3.5 mm with DK yarn, and using stitch markers so you do not lose your place. She says she is not a fan of Valentine’s Day, so she wrote it for showing any kind of love.
8. Amigurumi Heart
My Amigurumi Farm’s heart is small, 6 cm (2.36 inches) tall, worked on a 2.5 mm hook in Schachenmayr Catania cotton in pink, in spiral rounds with a magic ring. It is easy, and there are free video tutorials on her Facebook page, so it is a good keychain-size heart.
