Ten free Halloween knitting patterns, from hats and a cowl to a potholder, treat bags, a dog sweater, a zombie doll and a set of eyeballs. Most are quick projects, and I note the skill level wherever the designer states one.
Every pattern here is free, and every link goes to the designer’s own page, where the full pattern lives. The wire in the witch hat brim is optional for children. If you also crochet, I have roundups for ghosts and spiders.
Halloween knitting patterns to explore
1. Witch Hat Knitting Pattern
Designer Louise Bollanos at Handy Little Me. A black witch hat in adult, teen and child (4 to 12 years) sizes, rated beginner friendly. It takes one skein of super bulky Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, is knit flat and is seamed with mattress stitch. A thin wire through the brim holds the shape, though Louise says to use your own judgment on adding it to the child size. The instructions are free on the page.

2. Frankenstein Hat Knitting Pattern for Kids
Designer Gina Michele at gina-michele.com. A Frankenstein hat for kids aged 3 to 6, knit in the round in lime green and black worsted yarn with a little gray for the details. It uses US 9 circular and double pointed needles, and the gauge is 16 to 18 stitches to 4 inches. The full instructions are on the page.

3. Scaredy Cat Hat
Designer Amy Bahrt for Lion Brand. A Halloween cat hat for children in three sizes, with a finished circumference of 18, 20 or 22 inches. It uses worsted weight Vanna’s Choice at 16 stitches and 22 rows to 4 inches, and Lion Brand rates it intermediate. The pattern is a free download from the page.

4. Little Black Cat Pullover
Pattern from Lion Brand. A pullover in super bulky Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, offered in six sizes from S to 3X with a finished bust of 40 to 61.5 inches. Lion Brand rates it intermediate, and the gauge is 10 stitches and 16 rounds to 4 inches. The pattern is a free download from the page.

5. Halloween Houndstooth Cowl
Designer Heather Walpole at Noble Knits. A quick cowl in two colors of bulky Ewe Ewe Baa Baa Bulky yarn, shown in Black Licorice and Orange Peel, one skein of each. A simple slip stitch pattern makes the jagged houndstooth look, which Noble Knits says resembles little bats. It measures 13.5 inches long and 26 inches around after blocking, on a US 11 circular needle. The pattern is a free download.

6. Candy Corn Dog Sweater
Pattern from Red Heart at Yarnspirations. A candy corn sweater for your dog, in four sizes from XS to large for a range of breeds. It is worked in Red Heart Baby Hugs and rated intermediate. The page describes it as a free download with no sign up, and the designer says it also makes a gift for a dog lover.

7. Halloween Potholder
Designer Sarah Faith at Sarah Faith Crafts. A potholder with a jack o’lantern on one side and a bat on the other, knit in stockinette on size 7 needles and joined with a single crochet border. Sarah used Lion Brand Re-Up recycled cotton held double for extra thickness, at 14 stitches and 20 rows to 4 inches. The pattern is written row by row on the page.

8. Knitted Halloween Treat Bags
Designer Louise Bollanos at Handy Little Me. Two sizes of treat bag, small (9 by 5 inches) and large (15 by 5 inches) before seaming, knit flat on 6 mm needles in bulky yarn. Louise used scraps in three candy corn colors, and the pattern is rated basic, so it suits beginners. The free printable pattern is at the end of the post.

9. Classic Zombie Doll
Pattern from CraftFoxes. A zombie doll with a dangling eye, wounds and guts that tuck into their own pouch. It uses DK yarn on 3 mm needles, plus toy filling, beads, Velcro tape and snap fasteners, so read the long supply list first. The full pattern is free on the page, which CraftFoxes posted in 2013.

10. Eyeballs
Designer Stana D. Sortor at KnitPicks. Eyeballs knit in the round from the bottom up in three sizes, 1.25, 1.75 and 2.25 inches across. They use sport weight yarn and size 5 double pointed needles, with a listed yardage of 80, and one skein of each color makes several. KnitPicks rates the pattern intermediate and offers it as a free PDF download.
