Crochet Balaclava Patterns: 8 Free Statement Designs

Most crochet balaclava patterns are the same ski-mask shape in whatever yarn you had on hand. These eight skip that entirely: checkerboard granny squares, a plush sherpa fleece version, a heart-motif version, bunny ears. If you want a balaclava that actually gets noticed instead of just blending into a plain beanie, this is the list.

A few of these lean on bulky or super bulky yarn to keep the construction simple despite the bold look, so don’t let the visual drama fool you into thinking these are all advanced projects. The granny square ones are the most time-intensive since you’re joining multiple motifs, but the single-piece ones work up in an evening.

Bold balaclava patterns to explore

1. Cool Granny Square Balaclava

Designer Heini at Swool Nordic Design. Eighteen classic granny squares, alternating black and white across four rounds each, join into a sharp checkerboard effect that reads nothing like a standard balaclava. It’s worked in aran weight wool with a 4.5mm hook, and swapping the two-tone palette for something louder is just a yarn substitution away.

2. Granny Square Balaclava

Designer Heather at HayHay Crochet. Built from motifs about 5 to 5.5 inches across with a 5mm hook, this one is designed so any granny square pattern you already know how to make can become the balaclava, not just the one in the tutorial. Integrated ribbing around the face and neck is what keeps a patchwork of squares looking finished instead of improvised.

3. Heart Granny Square Balaclava

Designer Lisa Auch at LisaAuch Crochet. Four heart-shaped granny squares, seven rounds each, join to fit a 20 to 21 inch head, with a ribbed neckpiece finishing the bottom edge. Hearts instead of plain squares is a small swap that changes the whole personality of the piece, and any heart granny square pattern works here too.

4. Crochet Sherpa Balaclava Hood

Designer Megan Meyer at Left in Knots. Worked in half double crochet from a magic circle in Lion Brand Go for Fleece with an 8mm hook, which gives it a thick, plush sherpa texture instead of the usual flat ribbing. An eye opening made by chaining and skipping 8 stitches partway up leaves only your eyes showing, and the adult size takes about 105 yards.

5. Fuzzy Bearaclava

Designer Bianca Aldir at Ravelry. Bear ears are built right into a plush, fuzzy ski-mask balaclava, which Bianca designed because most balaclava patterns skipped the ears entirely. It uses Big Twist Plush super bulky yarn with an 8mm hook, takes under one skein (100 to 200 yards), and is one-size with try-on-as-you-go adjustments.

6. Aurora Borealis Balaclava

Designer Maria Isabel at Jimmy Beans Wool. Granny motifs frame the hood edge while the cowl and body are worked in textured ribbing, so the plain and patterned areas contrast. It’s worked in two skeins of Malabrigo Dos Tierras (merino and baby alpaca) with a 5.5mm hook, finishing at about 14¾” wide at the neck and 19½” long.

7. Retro Stripe Runway Balaclava

Designer the Red Heart Design Team at Yarnspirations. Self-striping yarn does the colorwork for you here, so the bold rainbow bands come from Red Heart Super Saver Stripes in the Retro Stripe colorway rather than any color-change technique. It’s worked in rows then rounds in half double crochet with a 5mm hook, genuinely beginner-friendly despite how loud the finished piece looks.

8. Ribbed Bunny Balaclava

Designer frogcrochet.pe at Ribblr. A ribbed balaclava base with optional bunny ears worked right into the crown, so you can leave them off for a plainer ribbed hood or keep them for the full effect. Two 100g balls of yarn and a 5mm hook are all it takes.
