Nine free flower coaster tutorials. I came across a coaster where the flowers rise around a mug as you set it down, and I went looking for free versions. Four recent YouTube tutorials show that pop-up style, and five more designers share flower coasters you can make in a few rounds.
Every tutorial here is free, and every link goes to the designer’s own page or video. The four pop-up ones are videos, so you watch and pause instead of reading, while the other five have written patterns. If you like small projects for your mug, I also have a roundup of mug cozies and one of sunflower patterns.
Flower coaster patterns to explore
1. Viral Crochet Flower Pop-Up Coaster Tutorial
Channel Lilyrosycrafts on YouTube. The description says that when you place a cup on the coaster, the flowers form a little garden around the drink. The video runs about 25 minutes and covers a double strand base, a tulip, a mini rolled rose with a calyx, four small five petal flowers, different leaves and a looped edging. The base holds two strands of 4 ply milk cotton together for a firmer coaster, and the flowers use a single strand. It uses US terms with 2.0 mm and 3.0 mm hooks.

2. Viral Crochet Flower Pop Up Coaster Tutorial
Channel The Crochet Knit on YouTube. A pop-up coaster video of about 7 minutes, with chapters for the coaster in 5 rounds, the leaves in 2 rounds, one flower round and the assembly, which starts at the 6 minute mark. It uses 5 ply cotton yarn (the description names Ganga Acrowools), 2 mm and 2.5 mm hooks, a tapestry needle, scissors and a stitch marker. It is the shortest of the four, so it is a good first watch.

3. Crochet Pop-Up Rose Coaster
Channel KaTee DIY on YouTube. Soft pink roses and green leaves stand up from the coaster for a pop-up garden effect. The video runs about 22 minutes, and the chapters show where the time goes: the rose sepal takes about 3.5 minutes, the leaves about 8.5, the rose about 5, then the assembly and the bottom base. The description lists no yarn or hook sizes, so check the materials section at 0:24. It thanks the original designer without naming them, so I credit the channel that teaches it here.

4. Crochet Pop-Up Flower Coaster
Channel Vilda Chayu on YouTube. An 11 minute step by step video made for beginners, with the description written in Indonesian. The materials list shows 5 ply milk cotton, a Tulip Gold 05 hook, 0.6 mm wire, pliers, a hot glue gun, scissors and a stitch marker, and it suggests watching at 720p to see the stitches clearly. The wire and glue are what let the flowers hold their shape.

5. Daisy Flower Coaster
From Jo to the World Creations. A daisy coaster about 5.5 inches across in white, yellow and green, with tr2tog and tr3tog stitches in the petals. The page says each coaster takes about 30 minutes and rates the skill level easy to intermediate. It uses medium weight yarn and a 4.5 mm hook. The written pattern, diagrams and video are all free.

6. Rose Bouquet Coaster
From Sweet Softies. A no-sew lacy coaster 3 inches across, with a dozen roses around the edge for about 5.25 inches overall. It has two flower variations, a young rosebud and a blooming rose, plus a flower pot for storage. The page rates it familiar beginner, with sport weight yarn and a 3.25 mm hook. The written pattern and video are free.

7. Crochet Flower Bouquet Coaster
Designer Viv at VivCrochets. Sage leaves and popcorn stitch flowers circle a white base, 14 cm (5.5 inches) overall and sized for cups under 9.5 cm. It takes about 16 grams of medium weight cotton per coaster and a 4 mm hook, in US terms. The same page adds a flower basket to hold the set. The written pattern and video are free.

8. Cute Flower Coaster Crochet Pattern
From Jenny & Teddy. A round single crochet base, then a green stem round and a round of pink flower buds. The page also gives a pot shaped pod to hold the coaster. It suits scrap yarn on a 4.0 mm hook and uses US terms. The written pattern is free on the page, and a YouTube video walks through the steps.

9. Crochet Flower Coaster Set in a Basket
Designer Tonya Bush at Nana’s Crafty Home. Four flower petal coasters, each about 5.5 by 6 inches, nest into a crocheted basket so the petals rise like a bud. It uses 100% cotton in two colors and a 4.0 mm hook, worked in joined rounds in US terms. The full written pattern is free, and a video covers the coaster motif.
