Small crochet keychains are useful for practicing amigurumi shaping with very little yarn. These six original patterns make a heart, strawberry, ice cream cone, and avocado at compact scales.

Keychain patterns to explore
1. Amigurumi Heart Keychain
Petra Salisbury’s heart keychain is an intermediate pattern that includes three versions using different yarns, so you can choose your size: pattern 1 uses a 2.5 mm (B/1) hook with sport weight yarn, pattern 2 a 3 mm (C/2) hook with DK, and pattern 3 a 3.5 mm (E/4) hook with worsted. She says this way you always end up with a small heart of the right size for a keyring or bag charm. The heart is about 2 inches wide and 1.75 inches high.
2. Strawberry Amigurumi
Mariska Vos-Bolman’s strawberry from DIY Fluffies comes in two sizes: about 4 cm in sport weight cotton on a B/1 (2.5 mm) hook, or about 10 cm in super bulky chenille on an H/8 (5 mm) hook. It includes the fruit and its leafy top, and is written in US terms. The small version works as a keychain or ornament, and the larger one is a soft toy.
3. Ice Cream Cone Keychain
Kali’s ice cream cone keychain is about 3 inches tall and is a perfect project for scrap yarn or half skeins. It uses worsted weight scrap yarn with a 2.75 mm hook and polyfil, and she says they make great gifts or craft fair items. She recommends stuffing the top as well as you can, using a stuffing stick, and you sew on the key chain through the bottom loop with the yarn tail. An ad-free PDF is on Etsy.
4. Avocado Keychain
Spin a Yarn Crochet’s avocado is an easy 1 to 2 hour project made of separate pieces: a peel, lighter flesh and a pit that you stitch onto the front panel with a 30 cm length of chocolate yarn. It uses Bernat Super Value in Lush, Loops & Threads Impeccable in Grass, Bernat Premium in Evergreen and Chocolate Tweed, a 3.5 mm hook and 8 mm safety eyes, with pink yarn for cheeks. It finishes at about 3.5 inches long.
5. Amigurumi Pig Keychain
Lucy Kate Crochet’s pig is a tiny rounded amigurumi worked in about 30 g of Hobbii cotton silk DK in pink, with 10 mm safety eyes, toy safe stuffing and a 2.5 mm hook. It starts from a magic circle of eight stitches and works in the round, using back-loop-only and front-loop-only rounds to shape the head. To attach the keychain ring, she sews through a stitch at the top of the head, back and forth at least three times, with yarn of the same color.
6. Mushroom Keychain
Kimberly Arenas’ mushroom keychain is about 2 inches tall in worsted weight yarn with a 4.5 mm hook, and she says the same pattern can turn into a Christmas tree ornament. She also made a bookmark version in embroidery thread that is under an inch tall. You can use red and white or experiment with other colors, even psychedelic variegated yarn, and there is an optional keychain ring and polyfill stuffing.
