7 Easy First Scarf Patterns for Beginners

A rectangle scarf is the classic first crochet project for a reason: no shaping, no fitting, just straight rows until it’s long enough. What actually varies between these seven is the stitch technique used to get texture, back-loop ribbing, a stitch-repeat combo, or a cluster stitch, so the “easy beginner scarf” category still has real room to pick a texture you like.

Beginner scarf patterns to explore

1. Crochet Scarf Pattern for Beginners

Sarah Stearns says most people finish this in about 2 to 3 hours, so it is a weekend project or last-minute gift. It is worked in half double crochet ribbing with a large hook and super bulky yarn, and the pattern is designed to use up every bit of two skeins of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick. The page has variations, such as fringe or doubling it up, and answers how long a scarf should be.

2. Easy Crochet Scarf for Beginners

Carmen’s scarf is a soft, squishy scarf with a simple stitch repeat, in worsted weight yarn on a 6 mm hook, and she used about 700 m of variegated pink. To change the width, use a foundation chain of a multiple of 3 plus 2. It can be made in any yarn weight, so it is a good stash project.

3. Easy Half Double Crochet Scarf

Josie Anderson’s scarf finishes at 86 inches long and 6.25 inches wide, in about 395 yards of medium weight yarn (two skeins of Lion Brand Heartland) on a 7 mm hook. The gauge is 13 stitches by 10 rows of hdc through the back loop only in 4 inches. It starts with a row of regular half double crochet, and the pattern has a video and an ad-free PDF for sale.

4. Easy Crochet Scarf for Beginners

Cheryl Bennett’s scarf is #6 super bulky yarn, Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Glacier, which has some wool so it is extra warm. The first row uses a larger hook, and after that it is a one row repeat until it is the width you want. She calls it the perfect gift, and there is a section on the best yarn for chunky scarves.

5. Half Double Crochet Scarf

Jessica Underwood uses Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti Pilling, a category 4 acrylic, on an H/8 (5 mm) hook, and the sample took about 486 yards. She found the yarn soft and easy to work with, and mentions that the two colors felt slightly different, which is worth knowing if you are matching yarn.

6. Easy Everyday Crochet Scarf

Rhondda Mol’s scarf alternates half double crochet rows with hdc3tog cluster rows, which makes a classic design that lets the yarn shine and adds some texture. It is easy to customize in length and color, so it is good for gifts. The written pattern, an edging and extra photos are on the page, and there is a video.

7. Easy Beginner Friendly Scarf

Kylee’s scarf is worked in the griddle stitch, also known as the lemon peel stitch, and it is a one row repeat. It finishes about 8.5 inches wide and 71 inches long, and it uses I Love This Yarn. She says the most common question was what yarn she used, because everyone loved the color.

Scarves in the back loop

Most of these are half double crochet worked in the back loop, which gives a stretchy ribbed fabric. It’s a great way to learn because you only need one stitch, and mistakes are easy to see. If you want a change, Okie Girl Bling ’n’ Things uses the griddle stitch, and Annie Design Crochet repeats single, half double and double instead of ribbing.
