Crochet rugs can use faux fur, unspun wool, T shirt yarn, or a row based design with a border. These eight original patterns have very different scale, hook sizes, and intended textures, so compare materials before choosing one.
Rug weight materials need a much bigger hook than you’d use for garments, check each pattern’s stated size before you buy one.
Rug patterns to explore
1. Furry Crochet Bear Blanket Rug
Jess Coppom’s bear rug is a rustic throw, a child’s play mat or a nursery rug, from Lion Brand’s Countdown to Christmas. It needs a size P (12.0 mm) hook plus an L (8.0 mm), and a note that P hooks vary from 10.5 to 15 mm, so check yours against the gauge. It is stuffed with about 5 to 10 oz of fiberfill, and a kit is available from Lion Brand.
2. Extreme Crocheted Rug
Stephanie made this extreme rug from 1 kg of unspun wool roving with a 40 mm crochet hook, after an extreme knitted blanket. You split the wool to half thickness first, and the pattern works in the third loop of half double crochets, with a felting needle and foam pad as optional extras.
3. Mellow Yellow Rug
Jessie Rayot’s Mellow Yellow is rated Intermediate, 18 by 30 inches, and it uses Willow Yarns Cub (60 percent cotton, 40 percent acrylic), 4 balls each of a main color and a contrast color, on an I/9 (5.5 mm) hook. She made it for the foot of her sink, where it brightens the kitchen, cushions and absorbs splashes. It is worked in rows, then a border, and uses a single crochet spike stitch.
4. T Shirt Yarn Rug
Rachel Misner made a small rectangular rug for her kitchen sink in T-shirt yarn, and says the hardest part was deciding between a circle and a rectangle. She likes T-shirt yarn for baskets, placemats and plant cozies too. It is worked in single crochet through the back loop only, 24 by 18 inches.
5. Solar Circle Rug
Veronika Cromwell’s round rug uses T-shirt yarn on a 15 mm hook for a 73 cm rug, and she admits not everyone likes working with T-shirt yarn, so she gives tips for making it easier on your fingers. It can be made in other yarns too: with a DK weight yarn held together the diameter is 65 cm, using about 265 g.
6. Chunky Hexie Rug
My Poppet Makes’ hexie rug is 74 by 53 cm (29 by 21 inches), made from 10 treble stitch hexagons in about 2 to 3 large skeins of assorted T-shirt yarn on a 12 mm hook. She says it is good as a bedside mat or in the bathroom, and it can go in the washing machine. It is written in UK terms, and there are videos on the magic loop and treble stitch.
7. Crochet Textured Rug
Megan Meyer made this with Bernat Home Bundle, a bulky yarn that combines four different textures in one skein, so you get a textured rug without changing yarns. It comes in cream and gray or solid cream, some skeins have variegated yarn in the mix, and you work double crochet rows.
8. Bernat Oval Rug
Bernat’s oval rug is rated Easy, in a single size, worked in Bernat Handicrafter Cotton (four balls or more), and it is a free download with no sign-up. It works double crochet back and forth and then folds and joins the piece into an oval.
