Christmas Granny Square Patterns: 10 Free Designs

Christmas granny squares are the easiest way into holiday crochet, because each one is a small project on its own and a blanket, a stocking, a garland or a stack of ornaments when you make more. These ten are all free, and each one links straight to the designer’s own page.

Sizes run from a 4 inch square to a 14 inch Santa, so check the measurements before you plan a blanket. If you want to learn how to put them together first, read our granny square joining guide, and for the other end of the year there is our Halloween granny square roundup.

Christmas granny squares to explore

1. Christmas Granny Square

Designer Maria Weaber at Maria’s Blue Crayon. A four round square worked from a magic ring, where front post and back post double crochets in rounds 2 and 3 give the center a squishy, textured look. It works up to 5 inches with any worsted weight yarn and a 6 mm hook, shown in ivory, green and red combinations, and there is a video tutorial on the page.

2. Blizzard Warning Granny Square

Designer Polly at Every Trick on the Hook. A puffy, snowflake like center with picot points that grows into a lacy two color square of about 9 inches, in worsted weight yarn with a 5.5 mm hook. It is free for personal use, but rounds 1 to 6 sit on a separate hexagon pattern page, so keep both open while you work.

3. Crochet Gift Box Granny Square (Version 2)

Designer Sarah at Repeat Crafter Me. A present shaped square worked in single crochet rows with color changes: 20 stitches wide for 21 rows, then border rounds with chain 2 corners. It uses Bernat Super Value in Berry, Lush, Aqua and White with an H hook. The page gives stitch counts rather than a finished size, so make a swatch first.

4. Christmas Tree and Hat Granny Squares

From Wiam’s Crafts. Two 6 inch squares in green, red and white: one with a tree and one with a hat, both made with triangle appliqués and finished with beads. It uses #3 light weight cotton (D.M.C Happy Cotton in the sample) and a 3.5 mm hook, and is rated intermediate. The written pattern with photos is on the page, and an ad free PDF is sold separately.

5. Christmas Gnome Granny Square

Designer Raffamusa at Raffamusa Designs. A 5.5 inch gnome in a DK weight yarn (Paintbox Simply DK in the sample) with a 3.5 mm hook, worked in rounds from a magic circle. It is part of a Christmas granny square collection, and the post is titled as a free pattern with a video tutorial.

6. Crochet Santa Granny Square

Designer Tonya Bush at Nana’s Crafty Home. The big one: a Santa that works up to a 14 inch square, starting as a circle of double crochet and squaring off. The face is half cream and half white, and the beard and hat trim are worked in the back loops and finished with fuzzy yarn for texture. It belongs to a series of large Christmas squares that also includes an elf, a reindeer, a snowman and a gingerbread man. The full pattern is free on the page, and an ad free PDF is sold.

7. Christmas Granny Square Snowman

Designer Caitie at Thoresby Cottage. A 3D granny square, about 13 cm across, with a stuffed snowman tummy and head, a scarf and buttons sewn onto the base and embroidered details. It uses Paintbox Cotton DK and a 2.75 mm hook, and the page says it can be combined with other 3D granny squares. The full written pattern is free, with a paid printable version available.

8. Granny Square Angel Ornament

Designer Ashleigh at Sewrella. A small angel built from two granny squares: one folded into the dress and a second sewn on as the wings, with a lightly stuffed round head and a goldenrod halo. It uses Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in white and goldenrod with a 3.5 mm hook. The full pattern is free on the page.

9. Granny Square Christmas Stocking

Designer Rebecca at Sweet Bee Crochet. A vintage feeling stocking from twelve 4 inch granny squares plus two toe pieces, about 13 inches tall and 11 inches from heel to toe. It uses about 185 yards of worsted weight yarn (Red Heart Super Saver in three shades) and a 5 mm hook, joined with an invisible seam. The pattern is free on the blog, and a printable version is sold.

10. Granny Joy Christmas Bunting

Designer Carmen Heffernan at Annie Design Crochet. A garland of nine granny triangles, 6.5 inches per side, each with a tassel at the point, for about 60 inches in total. It is rated easy and uses Sirdar Stories DK and a 3.5 mm hook. The written pattern is free, with no chart on the page, and a paid PDF with a photo tutorial and chart is sold separately.
