Crochet Fall Wearables: 12 Free Autumn Scarf, Cowl & Poncho Patterns

Twelve fall wearables, and nearly all of them are flat, seamed pieces rather than anything worked in the round: scarves, cowls, a couple of cardigans, beanies, a shawl, and one full poncho, with real assembly at the end of most.

A tapestry needle for seaming covers what these have in common. Beyond that, grab a worsted-weight yarn in a color you actually like and you’re set for most of the list.

Fall wearable patterns to explore

1. Crochet Sweater Scarf

Jennifer Renaud’s sweater scarf is a scarf with sleeves, in sizes XS to 5XL, worked all in one piece and beginner friendly. When done, you fold it in half lengthwise and seam the sleeve cuffs with a whipstitch, then play with the way you wear it. She says a self-striping yarn gives horizontal stripes from cuff to cuff. 2. One Skein Granny Rows Scarf

Sweet Bee Crochet’s scarf uses one cake of Lion Brand Mandala (the original DK line, about 570 yards) on a 5 mm hook, so it is one skein and no yarn shopping to plan. It alternates cluster rows with single and half double crochet rows. The gauge is rows 1 to 4 = 2 inches tall and 7 inches wide, and it is written in US terms. It is a clever way to make a long scarf from a single skein.

3. Brick Stitch Tunisian Crochet Cowl

This is a Tunisian cowl, using a simple brick stitch and color-shifting yarn, made in Lion Brand Heartland (2 skeins) and Ferris Wheel (1 skein) on an 8 mm Tunisian hook with a cord of 6 inches or longer. Jess Coppom says it is a good way to add Tunisian to your toolkit, and there is a video tutorial and a kit.

4. Perfect Fall Poncho

Tamara Kelly’s poncho is one size fits most adults, 50 inches wide and 26 inches high after blocking, in Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool (Aran weight, 465 yards, natural). It uses a simple cable-look pattern made with front post double trebles, so it works up fast, and the gauge is 13 stitches by 8 rows in 4 inches in double crochet. She says ponchos are a fantastic first adult garment, and there is a video.

5. Autumn Wheat Cardigan

Briana Kepner’s Autumn Wheat cardigan is rated Advanced Beginner and comes in sizes XS to 5X for a 32 to 62 inch chest, with a size H (5 mm) hook. She estimated the yardage for the medium length, which is the version in the photos, and says a shorter one takes less yarn, while a duster length needs about 25 percent more, and to buy an extra ball to avoid yarn chicken. It is worked cuff to cuff with two seams to close.

6. Fall Vibes Cardigan

Crochet Dreamz’s Fall Vibes cardigan is made from three pieces: a body worked in one piece with slits for the armholes, with no shaping, and two sleeves. It uses Lion Brand Mandala (Centaur) for the body and Premier Basix DK in taupe for the collar, hem and cuffs, on a 4.5 mm hook, and she says it works with any DK yarn. It comes in sizes XS to 3XL, and the color changes cheered her up.

7. Chelsea Cowl

Kelly Groves’ Chelsea Cowl is a beginner-friendly, super snug cowl scarf, worked in the round in chunky yarn with only half double crochet and double crochet, so it is a good quick gift for cold weather.

8. No Bunching Ribbed Beanie

Viv designed this ribbed beanie so the ribbing does not bunch at the crown, using an updated pattern with single crochet instead of slip stitch and no lining on the brim. She used acrylic yarn, which is very warm, and says you can adjust the size to your head, since she has a smaller head than average and finds it hard to buy hats that fit. There is a video, and a PDF is sold.

9. Autumn Harvest Beanie

The Autumn Harvest is worked top down in a mix of textures, in Lion Brand Heartland, which has the right drape for a slouchy hat. Shehnaaz first wrote it for a woman’s size but her test came out toddler size, so it is written in four sizes: baby, toddler, child and woman. She also worked on keeping the seam invisible, so the finish is neat.

10. Winterberry Beanie

Michelle Moore’s Winterberry is a cozy, textured hat for the whole family, with sizes from newborn to large adult, six in all. It is worked in worsted weight yarn on a 5.5 mm hook and is described as modern and cozy, with a video tutorial on the page.

11. Autumn Jewells Shawl

Veronika Cromwell’s rectangle shawl is 165 cm long and 65 cm wide, in Knit Picks Gloss (fingering weight, merino and silk), 5 skeins, on a 4 mm hook, and she says it is intricate-looking openwork suitable for advanced beginners. It uses V stitches, the gauge is 2 pattern repeats by 10 rows in 10 cm, and blocking mat and pins are needed.

12. Beautiful Flower Motif Shawl

Brianna Iaropoli’s flower motif shawl is a right triangle, worked from one corner and increasing, with a lacy texture from chain, single and double crochet in US terms. She says it has a wonderful vintage vibe, and the finished shape is a right triangle with two top corners clipped. It finishes about 46 by 48 by 60 inches in worsted yarn.
