Crochet Coaster Patterns: 7 Free Designs

Coasters are one of the few crochet projects where the stitch pattern gets to be the whole point, with no shaping or sizing to worry about. The seven below run from a plain square to sunburst texture, bobbles and fringe, and a woven thermal stitch, so pick based on the look you want rather than difficulty.

Keep a dedicated small hook and yarn needle around for projects like these; scrap yarn is usually enough to finish one.

Crochet coaster patterns to explore

1. Round Sunburst Crochet Coaster

Nicky’s Round Sunburst coaster (called the Boho Bloom Coasters on her page) is made in the round in cotton yarn, WeCrochet Dishie worsted, and finishes at about 4.5 inches across using about 20 yards, with a 5.5 mm (I) hook. The page has a step-by-step photo tutorial and a guided video, and she says it’s a fun, fast way to brighten up a coffee table or night stand. The puff and bobble stitches give it more surface texture than the flatter square coasters.

2. Easy Square Coasters

Red Heart’s Easy Square Coasters is a free downloadable pattern from Yarnspirations, made with classic granny square technique in Red Heart Super Saver acrylic. The page says you can make a set as a housewarming gift or stuff a few stockings. It is easy and can be done in any colors. The download needs no sign up, so it is the easiest pattern here to grab.

3. Boho Crochet Coasters

Alex’s boho crochet coasters were her crochet twist on the popular fringed macrame coasters, and they only use 30 yards of yarn, so they are great for busting a cotton stash. The rounds 1 to 7 are worked continuously, then bobbles and fringe are added, and the coaster measures 5 inches without fringe or 6 with it. She worked it on a 4.5 mm (G) hook, one size down from the label’s suggestion, to keep the stitches tight. It has sweet little bobbles that frame the glass.

4. Textured Crochet Coasters

Sewrella’s textured coasters use the thermal stitch, which she recently discovered and loves, held with two strands of worsted cotton for a thick, woven texture, and finishing at 4 by 4 inches. A 6.5 mm (K) hook takes the doubled strand. She used neutral colors with a heathered grey, and says two skeins make four coasters. She recommends cotton yarn and also has a matching potholder pattern, and it makes a good neighbor gift.

5. Granny Square Coaster

Louise Bollanos’ granny square coaster uses three colors of fingering weight yarn (scraps or mini skeins) and a 3.5 mm (US E-4) hook to make four small squares, joined 2 by 2 with a flat slip stitch seam and finished with a simple border. She recommends cotton or another durable natural fiber so the coasters handle moisture from cold drinks. You can swap to DK or worsted for a bigger coaster. It has a free printable pattern.

6. Lace-Edge Crochet Coaster

Carmen’s Christmas coaster pattern uses hygge-inspired colors from her stash: dark grey, sage green, light pink, red and a glitter white yarn. The instructions include details for making the holiday coasters in different colors or in a single color, and a bunch would make a lovely gift. A PDF is available on Ravelry and Etsy, and she links other coaster patterns, including square coasters with tassels.

7. Melini Geometric Coaster

Tina Rinaudo’s Melini Geometric Coaster was designed for a minimalist home, using sustainable yarn such as hemp or organic cotton (a hemp and organic cotton blend in the sample). Each coaster is built from two contrast color triangles worked into a square, then finished with a border and an invisible join, and it is small at about 3.25 by 3.25 inches after blocking. It uses DK weight yarn and a 4 mm (G) hook, and the pattern is completely free on the page.
