Crochet dish towels can use back loop texture, taller crossed stitches, or a Scandinavian style yarn over slip stitch. These eight original patterns state their finished sizes and stitch approaches so you can choose the fabric you want in the kitchen.

Cotton yarn is worth prioritizing for kitchen towels specifically, since it holds up to washing far better than acrylic.

Dish towel patterns to explore

1. Easy Crochet Dish Towel

Julie at I Can Crochet That uses worsted weight cotton on a G/4.25mm hook, in half double crochet through the back loop. The towel version measures 18 by 13 inches. Working through the back loop only leaves a ridged texture on the front face, giving the towel more grip for wiping down counters.

2. Kitchen Dish Towel

Ashley Parker at The Loopy Lamb uses worsted weight cotton on an I/5.5mm hook, combining herringbone double crochet and crossed double crochet. The finished towel is about 10.5 by 20 inches. Combining both taller stitches gives the fabric a woven look and more structure than a plain single or double crochet towel.

3. Scandinavian Style Dish Towel

Lou of Malloo, hosted by Tonya Bush at Nana’s Crafty Home uses a yarn over slip stitch and calls for worsted cotton in three colors. This yarn over slip stitch produces a dense, almost woven Scandinavian style fabric, and the three color striping sets it apart visually from the single color towels elsewhere on this list.

4. Crochet Towel

Jess Coppom at Make & Do Crew works a 14.5 by 23.5 inch towel in worsted weight cotton on an I, 5.5 mm hook, using a “boxed block stitch” that alternates double crochet rows with single crochet and chain space rows, plus a two color carry along striping technique.

5. Crochet Kitchen Towel

Nicky at Jewels and Jones finishes at 13.5 by 15 inches in worsted cotton on an I/5.5mm hook, worked mainly in half double crochet between stitch pairs for texture, with seamless color change stripes. Working between stitch pairs rather than into the stitch tops adds extra loft to the fabric without switching to a bulkier yarn.

6. Easy Crochet Kitchen Towel

Brittany at B.Hooked Crochet works a chevron stitch from back loop only single crochet groups in medium weight cotton on a 5.5 mm hook, with optional six row color striping, finishing about 21 by 23 inches. At 21 by 23 inches it’s roomier than most of the other towels here, more like a small hand towel than a compact dishcloth.

7. Dishie Towel

Melissa Fisher at Woods and Wool builds a waffle textured fabric from double crochet and front post double crochet over 68 rows in worsted 4 weight cotton on a G+, 4.5 mm hook, finishing at 28 by 16.5 inches, the largest towel on this list. This 68 row waffle texture also makes it more absorbent than a flat single crochet fabric, which suits its larger, towel like proportions.

8. Basic Keyhole Kitchen Towel

Jennifer Renaud at A Crocheted Simplicity alternates single crochet and double crochet rows in cotton yarn on a K/6.5mm hook for the chain setup and a J/6mm hook for the rows, working a keyhole opening partway through so the finished towel can hang from an oven bar by threading the bottom edge through the slit.
